Release No. 0332.04 FAS PR 0152-04 Alisa Harrison (202) 720-4623 Donald Washington (202) 720-3101 USDA AWARDS $10 MILLION UNDER 2004 EMERGING MARKETS PROGRAM WASHINGTON, Aug. 12, 2004 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture today announced that 86 agricultural trade-building projects will receive a total of $10 million in funding from the 2004 Emerging Markets Program. This year’s recipients include universities, federal agencies, trade groups and nonprofit organizations. Projects will be conducted in Africa, Asia, Eastern and Central Europe, South America and the Caribbean. "These funds will help foster growth in U.S. agricultural exports to low and middle-income countries," said Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman. The program supports generic promotion and distribution of U.S. agricultural products, trade missions, and research on new markets, and it encourages free trade policies. It also sponsors seminars and training so potential buyers in emerging economies can profitably use U.S. agricultural goods. All applications undergo a competitive review process. Qualification requirements include cost sharing and justification for federal funding. Other review factors include the quality of the proposal, likely success of intended approach in target markets, and knowledge of the market and of similar activities in the region. The program was authorized by the 1990 Farm Bill, amended by the 1996 Farm Bill and reauthorized by the 2002 Farm Bill. Additional information on the Emerging Markets Program is available on the Foreign Agricultural Service website at http://www.fas.usda.gov/mos/em-markets/em-markets.html, or by calling (202) 720-4327. A list of projects approved for funding in fiscal year 2004 is attached. # EMERGING MARKETS PROGRAM Projects Approved for Funding: Fiscal Year 2004 | Asia | Country | Project | Amount | China | Access
