H.R. 476 was introduced by Representative
Ros-Lehtinen in February 2001. This bill amends the federal criminal code
to prohibit transporting an individual under age 18 across a state line to
obtain an abortion in avoidance of laws requiring the involvement of
parents in abortion decisions. It does specify that the minor and her
parent may not be prosecuted or sued for a violation of this act, and does
make an exception if the abortion was necessary to save the life of the
minor.
I voted for this legislation on April 17, 2002 and it
passed by the House by a vote of 260-161. It is now pending before the
Senate.
