Cinco de Mayo, 2002

I send greetings to those celebrating Cinco de Mayo.

May 5th provides an opportunity to reflect on the ideal of freedom and to learn more about Mexico's struggle for independence. We are inspired by the courage and sacrifice of General Ignacio Zaragoza and his troops at the Battle of Puebla. Against great odds, they fought for liberty, opportunity, and hope. Today, we celebrate this important victory and the spirit of the Hispanic people with traditions and festivities that commemorate their rich history.

Cinco de Mayo also reminds us of the strong, vibrant relationship between the United States and Mexico. Our extraordinary partnership with a democratic Mexico brings enormous benefits to the citizens of both countries. Today we are cooperating in unprecedented ways to improve the quality of life for people on both sides of the border. This cooperation extends to the tremendous support our Mexican friends provided in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Today, we share this struggle against terror, and we are committed to working together to promote security and freedom for all people.

I encourage all Americans to participate in events that affirm the proud history of Mexico and express our appreciation of Mexico, its people, and Hispanic traditions.
