U.S. Committed to Strong, Vibrant NATO, Bush Says The United States is committed "to a strong and vibrant NATO," President Bush said November 10 during a joint press briefing with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. Bush praised NATO's "very constructive" role in Afghanistan as well as in the training of Iraqi security personnel. The president also said that he and de Hoop Scheffer "talked about the need to make sure NATO is relevant, that NATO is constructed in a way that is not only effective, but one that continues to foster free societies and democracy around the world."

De Hoop Scheffer noted, as did Bush, that he was the first foreign visitor to the White House since the president's re-election. That is "the best proof, I think, for the full commitment of the United States of America and this President Bush to NATO," the secretary general said. more | Nov 10, Secretary General meets with President Bush
