Phase II Rule
for Cooling Water Intakes Published
Published in the Federal Register on July 9th, this final rule protects
fish, shellfish and other aquatic life from cooling water intake structures
at large power plants. This is the first time in the 32-year history
of the Clean Water Act that EPA has established a systematic way to
address the environmental consequences of power plants that withdraw
more than 50 million gallons of water per day. The rule will protect
aquatic organisms from being trapped on intake screens or drawn through
the cooling systems.

Beach
Monitoring and Notification Grants
EPA is making available nearly $10 million in grants for beach monitoring
and notification programs to help eligible coastal states, territories,
including those bordering the Great Lakes and tribes meet the new
requirements under the BEACH Act. This is the fourth year in a row
these grants have been offered, totaling about $32 million since the
BEACH ACT passed in October 2000.

National List
of Beaches
This document is a picture of the extent of beach monitoring across
the country that will help EPA determine how to better implement the
BEACH Act. The List also provides information to the public about
beaches in their state. EPA will update this list periodically and
will publish notices in the Federal Register of any revisions to the
National List of Beaches.
