Personnel Announcement

President George W. Bush today announced his intention to nominate two individuals and designate one individual to serve in his administration:

The President intends to nominate John Joseph Grossenbacher of Illinois, to be a Member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, for the remainder of a five-year term expiring June 30, 2004. Upon confirmation, the President intends to designate him to be Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Vice Admiral Grossenbacher has served in the U.S. Navy since 1970 and currently serves as Commander of the U.S. Submarine Forces in the Atlantic. He previously commanded Submarine Squadron EIGHT and served as the Deputy Executive Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations. Among other awards received, he has been recognized with the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with three Gold Stars, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. Vice Admiral Grossenbacher is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and received his master's degree from Johns Hopkins University.

The President intends to nominate Peter Lichtenbaum of Virginia, to be an Assistant Secretary of Commerce (Export Administration). He currently serves as a partner at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, in Washington, D.C., where he represents clients on a range of international legal and policy issues. Lichtenbaum previously served as an Honors Attorney at the Department of Treasury and as Acting Political and Economic Advisor for the U.S. Embassy in Madagascar. He is a graduate of Princeton University, received his master's degree from the Kennedy School of Government and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School.

The President intends to designate Joan Ridder Challinor of the District of Columbia, to be Chairman of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science.
