Read the Human Genome Seqencing Analysis News Release International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium Describes Finished Human Genome Sequence
A new human genome analysis reduces the estimated number of human protein-coding genes from 35,000 to 20,000-25,000, a surprisingly low number for our species.

The ENCODE Project
The ENCODE Project aims to identify all of the functional elements in the human genome sequence and create an ENCyclopedia Of DNA Elements (ENCODE).

Medical Geneticists Elected to the Institute of Medicine
Two NHGRI medical geneticists, Dr. Alan Guttmacher and Dr. Robert Nussbaum, have been elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies, one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health.

The National Human Genome Research Institute led the Human Genome Project for the National Institutes of Health, which culminated in the completion of the full human genome sequence in April 2003. Now, NHGRI moves forward into the genomic era with research aimed at improving human health and fighting disease.
