Research Project: Field Longevity of Protein Bait, Male Annihilation Treatments with Fipronil for Control of Fruit Flies

Location: Tropical Plant Pests Research

2002 Annual Report

What was your most significant accomplishment this past year?
This report serves to document research conducted under Specific cooperative Agreement #58-5320-1-498 between USDA-ARS-PBARC (Dr. Roger I. Vargas) and Washington State University (Dr. John D. Stark). Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 0500-0004-007-00D Areawide Integrated Pest Management of Fruit Flies in Hawaiian Fruits and Vegetables. Fipronil, a possible organophosphate replacement, has shown outstanding efficacy against fruit flies throughout the Pacific and has been incorporated into cue-lure, methyl eugenol and protein bait formulations. However, fipronil is not registered for use in the United States. USPBARC, in cooperation with Washington State University (WSU), conducted field trials of fipronil in Hawaii as part of the Areawide Pest Management (AWPM) program. In addition, because fipronil may have adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems, the effects of fipronil on Daphnia pulex, a freshwater crustacean, were conducted at a Washington State University toxicology laboratory. Initial field data suggest that fipronil is excellent for male annihilation, particularly for melon fly; but would have to be used carefully for areawide fruit fly control or eradication until more non-target data are available.
