Emergency Managers Weather Information Network
Emergency Manager's Weather Information Network Now Available Through VHF
Radio in West-Central Missouri and Northeast Kansas!
The Emergency Manager's Weather Information Network (EMWIN) is now accessible
on VHF radio within approximately 80 miles of downtown Kansas City MO.
Through EMWIN, you can receive virtually all National Weather Service (NWS)
text products, such as forecasts, watches, warnings, and hourly conditions
from weather offices nationwide. The VHF frequency broadcasting the EMWIN
datastream is 139.2125 MHZ. The tireless efforts of the Kansas City Fire
Department and the Mid-America Regional Council made this service possible.
The EMWIN signal is received via satellite dish and rebroadcast on VHF
from the top of the City Hall building in downtown Kansas City. The 300
W transmitter rests approximately 300 feet above ground level. Transmission
of EMWIN data began during the evening of September 13th, 1996. To receive
NWS weather information via EMWIN, you need a computer, a radio capable
of receiving VHF-FM transmissions, a demodulator, and software. There are
no recurring costs (except the cost of electricity to power the PC and
radio).
