SunWise
would like to officially recognize elementary and middle school
educators and administrators, and other organizations showing exemplary and enthusiastic
commitment to sun safety education. To see if you qualify for
the Shining Star or Helios Leadership Award, read the program
description below.

SunWise Shining Star Award
Eligibility Criteria:
This designation recognizes partner schools and their educators
who are enthusiastically implementing SunWise in a variety of
different ways. Shining Star Schools and Educators have shown
a lasting commitment to sun safety education, either adapting
the program in new and effective ways, discovering unique ways
to share the SunWise message in the community, or implementing
the program in multiple classrooms or grade levels.
Application Process:
SunWise partner schools that meet the eligibility criteria should
submit a description (200 words or less) of how you implemented
the program, along with attachments that document your eligibility
for the award, such as lesson plans, student samples, photos,
or news clips about your SunWise work to:

Awards:

The school's Shining Star Educator or team
of educators who are taking the lead in sun safety education
in the school will receive a certificate suitable for framing.

Shining Star Schools and Educators will be
featured in the SunWise Monitor newsletter and on the
SunWise Web site
-
Lesson plans and other materials submitted
with the applications may be posted on the EPA SunWise Web
site.

Shining Star Schools will receive a template
press release announcing the award for distribution to local
media and school districts.
-
Shining Star Schools will be given 10 additional
UV-sensitive Frisbees for classroom use, as well as a SunWise
T-shirt and tote bag.
SunWise Helios Leadership Award
Eligibility Criteria:
The SunWise Helios Leadership Award is given to SunWise partner
schools that meet all of the eligibility criteria for the Shining
Star Award and that have shown outstanding leadership in school-based
sun safety education either by:

Instituting a policy to address sun safety
that can serve as a model to other schools/districts; or
-
Erecting a shade structure; or
-
Addressing the issue of a sun safety in
a way that sets them apart from the Shining Star Schools.
The Helios Leadership Award recognizes the SunWise partner school,
the participating school administrator, and participating educator(s)
who are most directly involved with achieving the program's success.
Application Process:
SunWise partner schools that meet the eligibility criteria should
submit a description (200 words or less) of how you implemented
the program, along with attachments that document your eligibility
for the award, such as lesson plans, student samples, photos,
or news clips about your SunWise work to:

Awards:
In addition to the awards outlined for the Shining Star Schools,
Helios Leadership Award winners will receive the following:

A letter of congratulations from the US Environmental
Protection Agency to the school's administrator and educator.

A Helios Leadership plaque for in-school display.
-
Free registration to attend one of the regional
or national professional conferences (NSTA, NCTM, NEA, NASN,
NMSA) at which SunWise exhibits, and an opportunity to appear
in the SunWise trade booth at the conference.

Distribution of an EPA news advisory for submission
to local media, including local television stations.
