overview
The International Macroeconomic Data Set provides data from
1971 through 2013 for real (adjusted for inflation) gross domestic
product (GDP), population, real exchange rates, and other variables
for the 35 countries and 22 regions
that are most important for U.S. agricultural trade. The data presented
here are a key component of the USDA Baseline
projections process, and can be used as a benchmark for analyzing
the impacts of U.S. and global macroeconomic shocks. The data for
the Baseline projections are updated once a year in December to
reflect the assumptions used for the Baseline. The historical data,
including preliminary estimates for 2004, will be revised semiannually
as the underlying data evolves.
feature
What factors underly shifts in global food consumption patterns
and the composition of world agricultural trade? Changing
Structure of Global Food Consumption and Trade explores the
effects of higher incomes, diet diversification, increasing demand
for higher quality and labor-saving products, and other factors
on food consumption and trade.

The following Excel spreadsheets provide the macroeconomic projections
used in the Baseline for 2000-13:
type of data and component software
Each component of the data set is available as an Excel spreadsheet.
GDP is presented in real 2000 dollars, while exchange rates are
expressed in foreign currency per U.S. dollar.
data updates
The data are annual series with historical data from 1971-2004 and
projections for 2004-13. Updates for the Baseline are done once
a year in December. The historical data are revised quarterly to
reflect revisions as they become available.
data sources and derivations
The GDP series is derived from the constant local currency series
in the World Bank World Development Indicators 2002 edition; conversion
to dollars is based on a fixed 2000 exchange rate. The population
series is from the Census
Bureau International Population Database. The historical exchange
rate series is taken from the ERS
Agricultural Exchange Rate Data Set. GDP shares are derived
by dividing individual country/region GDP by world GDP. Dividing
GDP by population yields per capita income. The GDP deflators and
consumer price indexes are from the World Bank World Development
Indicators. Gaps in all of the data series are filled in by a process
of interpolation or extrapolation.
related data
The agricultural Baseline database
provides long-run, 10-year projections found in USDA's annual Baseline
report. The database covers projections for major field crops (corn,
sorghum, barley, oats, wheat, rice, soybeans, and upland cotton),
and livestock (beef, pork, poultry and eggs, and dairy).
The ERS agricultural exchange rate
data set contains annual and monthly data, on both a nominal
and real basis, for 80 countries (plus the European Union) as well
as real trade-weighted exchange rate indexes for many commodities
and aggregations.
