Who Are We?
The Young Worker Safety & Health Network is an organization of individuals who have, as a common goal, the safety of youth in the workplace. The Network was founded at the 1997 American Public Health Association Conference in New York City. This group is comprised of researchers, educators, medical specialists, pediatricians, government and other interested persons. We work to ensure our youth have safe and healthy workplace experiences that support positive educational and age-appropriate experiences. Basically, we want America's working youth to grow up healthy, have positive education and career experiences, and become ideal contributors to our society. To accomplish this mission, our youth must remain safe in their working environs.

OSHA is committed to protecting the health and safety of all U.S. workers. As young people enter the workplace, they should be aware of safety and health issues. OSHA has placed this section on its website in an effort to facilitate this work.

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Young Worker Safety and Health Network (YWSHN) is to serve as a networking vehicle for professionals to assist each other in developing and taking a comprehensive approach to protecting young workers. The focus of the Network is youth under 18 years of age. A comprehensive approach targets and involves youth, parents, employers, educators, unions and relevant public and private agencies, and includes training and education, creation of a safe work environment, and passage and enforcement of effective laws.

Work can be a positive experience building esteem, instilling good work habits, and be financially rewarding at a young age. But it can also be a negative experience if youth are put at risk for work-related injuries or illnesses, sexual harassment or wage/hour violations. They may also work long hours that interfere with school work and other age-appropriate activities. The Network acknowledges that these conditions exist for many young workers and steps must be taken to ameliorate them.

Our Goals:
  1. Advocate for adequate resources and leadership to implement the recommendations contained in the IOM report, "Protecting Youth at Work."*

  2. Promote and share products and materials developed for educational purposes.

  3. Promote public awareness of the unique characteristics and needs of teen workers and how to protect them.

  4. Promote and share research that:
    1. further clarifies the scope and specifics of the problem;
    2. allows practice and policy to be set based on scientific evidence; and
    3. evaluates interventions to reduce the problem.
  5. Advocate for protective child labor laws in each state and at the national level.
*Protecting Youth at Work: Health, Safety, and Development of Working Children and Adolescents in the United States. Committee on the Health and Safety Implications of Child Labor, Board on Children, Youth and Families, Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, National Research Council, Institute of Medicine. Washington, DC: National Academy Press, 1988.

What Do We Do?
The Network operates as an informational tool for anyone who has a need or interest. Some members work on research projects in schools, workplaces and government agencies. Others draft model curriculums for schools to implement, primarily in vocational areas. Some provide data for use when sponsors are drafting laws or regulations. Many generate informational pieces for use by youth, parents, educators, employers, government agencies, advocacy groups and anyone else requesting assistance.

For Information:
If you have any need for information or assistance, please contact any Network member or their organization for assistance. Below we have included names, affiliations, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses where available. Please feel free to contact any of us for help. We will be pleased to assist you.  The current co-chairs of the Network are Diane Bush (dbush@uclink4.berkley.edu) and Mary Miller (mmar235@lni.wa.gov).

The Network operates an email system referred to as a listserve. Use of this mail list allows us to generate immediate communication to serve the Network's needs and goals. If you would like to subscribe to the listserve, change your existing e-mail address, delete your e-mail address from the list, or add someone else to the list, please e-mail Guifeng Gin at gjin@email.unc.edu and she can make the changes to the list. If you are interested in communicating to subscribers of the listserve, all you need to do is to address your Internet e-mail message to: youthwrk@listserv.oit.unc.edu. The Network is much indebted to the University of North Carolina Injury Prevention Research Center for their assistance in keeping up this listserve.
