Federal U.S. labor laws, state labor laws and OSHA laws apply to youth workers. Be aware that some of these links will send you to specific state sites that may make reference to laws governing employers and employees in that state only. Employers must comply with both federal and state laws. When federal and state standards are different, the rules that provide the most protection to youth workers will apply.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

    Presents steps to prevent worker injuries and deaths, statistics, and regulations.

Details types of work associated with large numbers of young worker deaths, as well as regulations and recommendations, and a list of jobs prohibited by Federal child labor laws.

  • National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This site includes Spanish-language versions of many NIOSH workplace safety and health documents relevant to industries and occupations in which large numbers of Spanish-speaking workers are employed. It also describes, in Spanish, how workers and employers can contact NIOSH and access basic services, such as health hazard evaluations.

  • The Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs. The Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs has developed Public Service Announcements (PSAs) on international child labor. The PSAs have been produced in both English and Spanish.

  • National COSH Network. The National Network of Committees/Coalitions on Occupational Safety and Health is a network of non-profit organizations around the United States that advocate for worker safety and health. This site also focuses on practical tools for workers in using their rights under OSHA and resources for particular groups of vulnerable workers such as immigrant workers and youth.
