Topic
A search by topic can be useful when the subject of a particular document
is known, but the title is not. The search can be one or more words, and will
retrieve all documents that pertain to a particular subject. It is important
to remember that broad search terms will yield more results than a more
specific search.

When searching by title, it is usually not necessary to key in the
complete title of the publication. Important words or phrases will usually
bring up the desired title. Searching a subtitle should also retrieve the
full title.

Stock Number
A search for a GPO sales stock number is a very specific search. The
search should retrieve only one record and a query result. It may be
preferable to search for stock number in the full text search box in case a
new edition is superseding a government information product. When this
happens, the new stock number will appear in the note field and often in the
cross-reference stock number fields. It is also possible to search stock
numbers in the note field.

SuDoc
Classification Number
The Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) classification system is designed
to group together Government information products by the same government
corporate author. Within an agency or Department, Government information
products are grouped according to subordinate organizations. The purpose of
this system is to identify uniquely, logically relate, and physically arrange
each Government information product so that all Government information
products of a single agency or department may be found together.

Depository Library item numbers can also be searched in the SPC. It is
important to point out that not all citations in the SPC have item numbers,
so this search works best when looking for specific documents. It is
important for item number queries to be enclosed in quotation marks.

description.
