Topic

A search by topic can be useful when the subject of a particular document is known, but the title is not. The search can be one or more words, and will retrieve all documents that pertain to a particular subject. It is important to remember that broad search terms will yield more results than a more specific search.

Query: "military history" AND battlefields
Results: American Armies and Battlefields in Europe: A
     History, Guide, and Reference Book
United States Army in World War 1 (CD-ROM)
Richmond National Battlefield Park, Virginia

Title

When searching by title, it is usually not necessary to key in the complete title of the publication. Important words or phrases will usually bring up the desired title. Searching a subtitle should also retrieve the full title.

Query: "IRS Form 1040EZ"
Results: Income Tax Return for Single and Joint Filers With No
Dependents, IRS Tax Form 1040EZ, 1998
Income Tax Return for Single and Joint Filers With No
     Dependents, IRS Form 1040EZ, 1999
Income Tax Return for Single and Joint Filers With No
     Dependents, IRS Form 1040EZ, 2000

Agency

To search for publications offered for sale by a specific agency, key in the name of the agency, either in its entirety or using its acronym.

Query: "bureau of labor statistics" OR "bls"
OR "labor statistics bureau"
Results: BLS Reader on Productivity
BLS Handbook of Methods
Employee Benefits Survey: A BLS Reader

Author

To search by author, key in the last name of the author, followed by the first name. For example, if performing a search for publications authored by Al Gore, use the search: "Gore, Al". Keying "Al Gore" will run a search for publications authored by an author with the last name Al.

Query: "Gore, Al"
Results: Creating a Government That Works Better & Costs
Less, Report of the National Performance Review,
     September 7, 1993
Federal Welfare-to-Work Commitments: A Report to
President Bill Clinton by Vice President Al Gore
Getting Results Through Learning

Stock Number

A search for a GPO sales stock number is a very specific search.  The search should retrieve only one record and a query result. It may be preferable to search for stock number in the full text search box in case a new edition is superseding a government information product. When this happens, the new stock number will appear in the note field and often in the cross-reference stock number fields. It is also possible to search stock numbers in the note field.

Query: "040-000-00728-8"
Results: Economic Report of the President, 2000

It is also possible to search by ISBN or ISSN numbers in the SPC:

Query: "0-16-050275-6"
Results: Economic Report of the President, 2000

SuDoc Classification Number

The Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) classification system is designed to group together Government information products by the same government corporate author. Within an agency or Department, Government information products are grouped according to subordinate organizations. The purpose of this system is to identify uniquely, logically relate, and physically arrange each Government information product so that all Government information products of a single agency or department may be found together.

Query: "C 1.1/8:2000"
Results: Budget and Annual Performance Plan of the United
States Department of Commerce, Fiscal Year
     2000 (CD-ROM)

Item Number

Depository Library item numbers can also be searched in the SPC. It is important to point out that not all citations in the SPC have item numbers, so this search works best when looking for specific documents. It is important for item number queries to be enclosed in quotation marks.

Query: "0327-J"
Results: Pakistan: A Country Study
Greece: A Country Study
Syria: A Country Study
Cambodia: A Country Study
Sri Lanka: A Country Study

Fielded Search

Fielded searching allows the user to make searches more specific by limiting results to one or more of the following pre-selected elements: stock number, title, author, publisher, year/pages, key phrases, note, and description.

Query:

Author: "Gore Al"
Year: 1997
Key Phrase: welfare

Results: Federal Welfare-to-Work Commitments: A Report to
President Bill Clinton by Vice President Al Gore
