 STOKES EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Stokes Educational Scholarship Program (formerly known as the Undergraduate Training Program) was proposed and introduced into legislation in 1986. Its purpose is to facilitate the recruitment of individuals, particularly minority high school students, who have demonstrated skills critical to NSA. NSA currently recruits students from all over the country who plan to major in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Math, or Foreign Language (Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, or Korean)*.

Application Deadline
Applications must be received by November 30th of each year.

About the Program
With the Stokes Program, you work during the summer at NSA in areas related to your course of study. If you are selected as a program participant, you are required to work for NSA after your college graduation for at least one-and-one-half times the length of study. If you leave NSA employment earlier, you must reimburse the government for your tuition and book costs. (Please note: Eligible students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale each semester after their freshman year.)

*This program is also open to college sophomores who are majoring in Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, or Korean.

Benefits

  • Tuition at the college of your choice
  • Reimbursement for books and certain fees
  • Housing and travel entitlements during summer employment (if the distance between NSA and the school exceeds 75 miles)

Qualified career fields
You may choose a full-time major in one of the following areas:

Computer Science
NSA Computer Scientists work in such areas as applications programming, computer security and graphics, and the design and implementation of software involving database management systems, real-time systems, networking, and distributed processing systems.

Electrical or Computer Engineering
The challenges and experiences in these areas range from pure and applied research, design, development, and testing to project management and systems analysis. You will be involved in projects that focus on communications systems, computer security and networking, microprocessor applications, software engineering, and optics.

Languages
It's a global world. That's one reason NSA depends on Language Analysts to perform an array of key duties such as transcribing, analyzing, and reporting on foreign communications. Your language major will allow you to contribute to real-world problem solving on a daily basis. (Because our language requirements may change, students interested in a language major should contact us to verify our specific language needs at that particular time.)

Mathematics
Mathematics with NSA is a multi-faceted career path. You will be able to work with a variety of NSA professionals, provide technical assistance, and conduct long-range research. You'll have the opportunity to apply and generate advanced concepts from Galois theory and combinatorics to probability theory and astrodynamics. Whether your focus is on pure math or creative problem solving, NSA offers a multitude of challenges.
