NIOSH Safety and Health Topic:

Education and Training in Mining

This topic area covers methods and materials for training miners, as well as preventing injuries and illnesses by improving the organization of work.

Most NIOSH-developed mine training materials can be ordered through the MSHA National Mine Health and Safety Academy (Phone: 304-256-3257, Fax: 304-256-3368, E-mail: MSHAdistributioncenter@dol.gov). Many are downloadable through links on this topic page.

Highlights: Toolbox Training for Construction Aggregate Miners
Toolbox Training exercises, which are 10-15 minute weekly sessions conducted with the work crew on-site prior to the work shifts, is a popular mode of worker occupational safety and health training. NIOSH has developed a set of 52 one-page topics relevant to construction aggregate miners. The training covers hazards, best practices, and accident stories, and includes discussion among the work group to share experiences and site specific information.

Mine Emergency Response Interactive Training Simulation (MERITS)
The Mine Emergency Response Interactive Training Simulation (MERITS) provides trainees an opportunity to gain command center experience during a simulated underground coal mine emergency. This computer-based training allows trainees to practice information gathering, situation assessment, decision-making, and coordination skills without risk to personnel or property.

Strategies for Improving Miners' TrainingPDF logo PDF 2.48 MB (57 pages)
Many of today's miners are nearing retirement. New miners may be young people who lack the skills to recognize and respond to mining hazards in an appropriate manner. They may also have had different educational experiences than their older counterparts. This report helps to prepare mine trainers for the changes about to occur in the workforce and acquaints them with strategies they can use to enhance the effectiveness of their training.

This paper discusses the application of a training intervention that uses degraded images for improving the hazard recognition skills of miners.

Principles of Adult Learning
It is important to understand and integrate principles of adult learning in training the nation's miners. Attention must be given to the miner population and how individuals learn and respond to information.

Training Evaluation Tips
Evaluation of training within work settings can assist you in learning more about your organization. It is important to understand the purpose of your evaluation before planning it and choosing methods to do it.
