What is the 800-NUMBER?The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 800-number is a toll-free technical information service that provides convenient public access to NIOSH and its information resources. The service is available to anyone in the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands by calling the following numbers:
Callers may request information about NIOSH activities, order NIOSH publications, or request information about any aspect of occupational safety and health. However, this toll-free number is NOT a hotline for medical emergencies.
How does the 800-NUMBER work?The 800-number combines an automated voice-mail system with direct access to NIOSH technical information staff and the NIOSH Publications Office. The automated system operates 24 hours a day. It provides recorded information on a variety of topics, including directions for ordering NIOSH publications. In addition, callers may speak directly with a technical information specialist from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. or to a publications representative from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. (eastern time). All information is provided free of charge within ten working days.Outside the U.S. the commercial toll number is (513) 533-8328.
What kind of information is available?The automated voice-mail system provides recorded and fax information about NIOSH publications and computerized databases, NIOSH-sponsored training courses and grants, the NIOSH health hazard evaluation (HHE) program, and selected topics such as carpal tunnel syndrome, indoor air quality, and homicide in the workplace. Additional topics may be added to the system. For other inquiries, you may speak with a technical information specialist or publications representative. If necessary, we will send you a packet of information containing relevant NIOSH publications (or ordering information if we are out of stock), non-NIOSH references, or appropriate referrals.
