FAQ
DOCLINE -- ISO ILL Protocol and Loansome Doc

Question: How will Loansome Doc requests be handled using the ISO ILL Protocol?
Answer:

A DOCLINE library choosing to use the ISO ILL Protocol to communicate between a third-party interlibrary loan management system such as ILLiad and DOCLINE can no longer provide Loansome Doc service. The ISO ILL Protocol standard currently supports interlibrary loan messaging between libraries only. It does not support messaging of patron-initiated requests between patrons and providing libraries.

If your library is a Loansome Doc provider and you would like to use the Protocol to communicate with DOCLINE, you must register a Document Delivery Service with PubMed. PubMed's Document Delivery Service works similarly to Loansome Doc via the "Send to 'Order'" function, but it sends patron requests directly to your ILL system. Switchover of all Loansome Doc patrons to the Document Delivery Service must take place before your library can register to use the ISO ILL Protocol.

Some benefits of using this method to receive patron-initiated requests are:

Instructions:

  1. Register your PubMed Document Delivery Service with NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information). See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/linkout/doc/docdel.html for instructions. Use Contact DOCLINE to request a sample registration form. Registration with NCBI can take up to one week.

  2. If any of your Loansome Doc patrons do not have user records in your ILL system, you will need to create user accounts for them. For a list of your current Loansome Doc Patrons, export your LD patron data by going to the Loansome Doc Patrons tab in DOCLINE. Choose Display Results As: Patron Address In Order To: Download Results in ASCII. Save the generated spreadsheet by choosing "Save this file to disk".

  3. When registration is complete, NCBI will list your library's service as a document delivery option under 'Cubby Resources' in the PubMed Cubby. NCBI will also give your library a URL for PubMed that directs all orders placed in PubMed to your library's document delivery service.

  4. Publicize the change from Loansome Doc to PubMed Document Delivery Service and train patrons to use PubMed’s Cubby or access PubMed via your institution’s special URL to send requests from PubMed to your institution. At this stage, your library can receive requests from either Loansome Doc or the PubMed Document Delivery Service.

  5. When you and your patrons are ready to stop using Loansome Doc and start using only the PubMed Document Delivery Service, set LD Provider to 'No' in "Services and Fees" in your DOCLINE institution record.
Note: Your library will no longer appear in the Find a Document Delivery Provider directory

  6. Patron management and requests will all take place in your ILL system, and these messages will stop appearing on the DOCLINE home page:
    ## Loansome Doc requests received awaiting completion
    ## Loansome Doc requests awaiting LD RECEIPT
    ## New Loansome Doc Patrons registered with your library

When you have completed the transition from Loansome Doc to the PubMed Document Delivery Service, you can begin the registration process to use the ISO ILL Protocol with DOCLINE.

ILL system vendors that implement the Protocol with NLM should create the interface between PubMed's Document Delivery Service and their own systems.
