"I think parents have a unique position they should be able to educate
their children on smoking and if a parent smokes around their children, it
is not responsible. Parents if your smoking around your children, you should
really think about what you’re doing. Your kids watch everything you do,
they learn from you. If they see you smoking a cigarette, and they want to
smoke a cigarette. its not how you should raise your kids. Educate them, let
them know what the right thing is to do. Cool is being yourself, taking care
of your body, and being responsible for yourself and those around you."

"The tobacco industry has really glamorized smoking. Ever since I was a
little kid, I remember seeing commercials, magazine articles on how cool it
was to smoke. Beautiful women, rugged men, its not cool. Smoking doesn’t
make you more powerful, it doesn’t make you more popular, it’s just the
opposite I think. Not smoking is cool, just being yourself, being part of a
crowd because they don’t smoke. All my friends that I’m around, they don’t
smoke, I don’t smoke, and it’s a great life style."

"I love tobacco free sports and I believe in being healthy, and
participating without drug and tobacco use. I love the freedom, the fresh
air, the wind blowing through your Face. And just letting it go, and going
as fast as you can and having fun. My biggest fear in life is to not reach
my potential. So, everyday I’m trying to be the best that I can be. I can’t
imagine using tobacco, and things that we know are dangerous to ourselves.
It just, it doesn't make sense to me."

"My Grandmother passed away this year, um she died of cancer. She smoked
her whole life. I’m passionate about not smoking, because my parents smoked
while I was a child growing up. In a house were they would smoke freely, and
I would get headaches, and I hated it. I hate the smell, I hated the smoke
in the air. I couldn’t be an elite athlete if I smoked. I couldn’t, I
couldn't have the stamina, I wouldn’t be able to breathe. Parents, don’t
smoke around your kids, and kids don’t start smoking, It’s not cool."

"I’m a control freak. And I wouldn’t want to do anything like smoking,
where I may not be in control of myself. It's an addictive habit. If you
wanna be rebellious and you want to do something different, something
different from what all the other kids do, just find something you have a
passion in, like sports and push yourself as far as you can. Bobsledding is
fast, it’s exhilarating, you’re going 85 MPH, pulling up to 4 or 5g. My goal
is a gold medal in 2002."

"I train four to five hours a day, I like to fly across the snow, I like
to be fast, I like to be the best at what I do. I love people too much to
see them harm themselves. I think that they should experience the high of
sport. And find whatever passion they love, whether it’s sports, school or
some other hobby. Smoking is not cool. If you’re a smoker remember there’s
people who love you too much to see you hurt yourself."

"I wouldn’t say I’m a rebel, I'd say I'm a leader in my own way. I’m a
leader because I don’t let friends influence me into things I don’t want to
do. When I stopped smoking, I just found a hobby. I found something to do. I
started running, started lifting weights, taking care of myself, started
eating right. Kids start smoking because they do what their friends do, and
kids see what their parents do. So my advise is for the parents to stop
smoking if your kids do what you do, they'll stop smoking also."

"It doesn’t make sense to me in a logical way to put smoke into my lungs.
And I don’t think that’s positive for anybody. I remember what its like to
be a kid, you never feel like you’re cool enough, you never feel like you’re
good enough. Find something that you love to do. If you love to do something
you’re gonna do whatever you can to get better at that. You work on
something and you might not be good at it in the beginning, but you hope you
keep getting better and you hope you get more secure with yourself. And I
don’t think smoking is a part of being secure. You can definitely be cool
and not smoke."

"I feel smoking is a very disgusting habit. It's something that makes
your hair smell, makes your clothes smell, it makes everyone around you
cough and gag. It’s a disgusting habit, it make your teeth brown and yellow,
and gives you diseases. So I think it's gross. I think kids should always
try to do their personal best. You have to set goals for yourself. The
tobacco industry should not target kids, its horrible. Kids don’t be wanna
be, do what you gotta do, be strong and stay on course."

"How can you be where I am, be anybody using tobacco. We’re sometimes at
10,000 Feet, if you’re smoking cigarettes up there you’d not be able to
breathe doing what I do. Tobaccos not sexy, the tobacco industry makes you
think it’s sexy. It's gross, it smells, you got bad breath. Girls that
smoke, you ever kiss a girl that smokes, it’s disgusting. Guys that spit
tobacco on the ground, its gross. You know there’s nothing appealing about
it. What do I think about tobacco, tobacco sucks."

"I’m Lea Ann Parsley, fire fighter, US Olympian, and a
nonsmoker. Aside from being an athlete, I’m also a registered nurse. And
most of the health problems I have encountered can be related to poor health
habits, such as smoking. Smoking is not glamorous because of all the health
problems you can encounter. If you’re thinking about smoking remember this,
most people who do smoke are trying to quit. I can tell you for sure smoking
is not a contributing factor to being a world class athlete."

"Smoking is not a normal, natural function. Putting a fire in your face
and breathing the smoke in, is something we would normally try to avoid. You
gotta ask yourself why current smokers tell non-smokers not to start.
There’s a reason for it. They get hooked, they can’t stop, they don’t like
it, they want to quit, and they spend the rest of their lives trying to
quit. Tobacco companies want to make smoking look cool, but its not. What is
cool is being the bringing the best out in yourself, rising to your
potential and accomplishing something real."
