Mission:
The overall mission of the station is to serve as a national sugarcane crossing unit that supports sugarcane cultivar development programs. The breeding CRIS supports NP 301 and provides true seed to ARS sugarcane cultivar development programs at Houma, LA, Canal Point, FL and the Texas A&M; University breeding program at Weslaco, TX; a cultivar development program in Florida, and development of water table regimes that maximize cane yield and minimize soil subsidence. The pathology CRIS supports NP 303 by development and application of improved disease detection and screening techniques for sugarcane diseases and studies of disease epidemiology. The soils CRIS supports NP 202 by the development of rapid methods to assess the activity of soil microbes. Scientists from each CRIS participated in their national program workshop. A high water table yield test is continuing with USSC. Yellow leaf virus is a continuing problem and lack of source of resistance is a concern in the breeding program.
