Research Project:
Development of Commercial on-Line Automated Poultry Inspection System
Location:
Instrumentation and Sensing Laboratory
Project Number: 1265-42000-008-03
Project Type:
Trust
Start Date: Jan 01, 2002
End Date: Dec 31, 2004
Objective:
The overall objectives of this CRADA are to join the resources and expertise of ISL and Stork Gamco, Inc. to build, test, and refine commercial automated chicken inspection systems, based on the visible/ near-infrared spectroscopic, and multiple-imaging systems developed by ISL. The goal is to make the automated poultry inspection systems commercially available to chicken processing plants.
Approach:
(1) Develop commercial automated on-line poultry inspection systems based on the visible/near-infrared and multispectral imaging technologies developed by ISL, (2) Test operation of the commercial systems in poultry processing plants, (3) Calibrate the commercial poultry inspection systems (build classification models), (4) Test the automated systems for a prolonged period of time at commercial poultry processing plants, and (5) Develop online training protocols, so that the systems can automatically recalibrate as new populations of chickens are encountered, incorporating the expertise of veterinarians and floor inspectors. The first system will be based on visible-infrared spectrophotometer technology, followed by a second system based on multispectral imaging technology.
