Homelessness
is a problem that affects many people in America. If you are homeless
yourself and need help or if you want to learn more about homelessness
and how you can help, we have information for you. You can also
find detailed information on HUD's homeless assistance programs.
Who
are the Homeless and How Can You Help?
Generally
speaking, homeless individuals and families are those who are sleeping
in places not meant for human habitation, such as cars, parks, sidewalks,
and abandoned buildings, or those who are sleeping in an emergency
shelter as a primary nighttime residence. To learn more about homelessness,
you can read a profile
of homelessness or check out facts
about homelessness.
If
you would like to help, you can contact a Homeless
Assistance provider, donate to your local
food bank, or learn about ways to volunteer
your time. Information on how kids
can help the homeless is available as well.

Resources
for Homeless Persons
If
you are homeless, help is available! HUD, along with many other
federal agencies, funds programs to help persons who are homeless.
These programs are managed by local organizations that we call "homeless
assistance agencies." They provide a range of services, including
shelter, food,
housing counseling,
and job skills programs. You can start by contacting one of the
local homeless assistance agencies
in your area.
