Research Project: Transition Models for the Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico

Location: Range Management Research

Project Number: 6235-11210-005-10
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Sep 01, 2000
End Date: Aug 31, 2005

Objective:
(1) Test the degree to which the assessment samples gathered by the BLM in a previous assessment characterize the conditions present across the watershed as determined by an intensive sample. (2) Examine the feasibility and methods to extrapolate assessment samples to broader areas using two kinds of imagery, QuickBird and LandSat 7. (3) Develop indicators of broad-scale processes and concepts for their interpretation in terms of rangeland health based on remote-sensed images.

Approach:
These objectives will be addressed by gathering intensive qualitative and quantitative samples of vegetation and soils in a series of watersheds previously assessed by the BLM Field Offices. Then, we will build quantitative relationships between these and existing measurements and with spectral classes derived from different kinds and resolutions of remote-sensed imagery.
