Research Project: Effects of Various Seed Cotton Handling and Ginning Practices on Boll Weevil Survival

Location: Cotton Production and Processing Research

Project Number: 6208-21410-005-01
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Jun 01, 2001
End Date: May 30, 2005

Objective:
(a) Evaluate the cotton gin's various subprocesses to determine the survivability of adult weevils during normal gin processing and (b) develop ginning equipment specifications and operating procedures that insure that any weevils brought to the gin are killed during processing.

Approach:
Research will be performed at the Lubbock, TX ginning laboratory using its full-scale ginning and materials handling facilities. The engineering and operational aspects of these activities will be under the supervision of agricultural engineers and other laboratory staff experienced in the operation of cotton gin machinery. A research entomologist (Weslaco) will provide advice and assistance with the entomological aspects of these studies. Day to day research activities will, for the most part, be the joint responsibility of the ginning laboratory staff and research associates/technicians stationed at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, Lubbock, TX. Experiment station staff will provide advice on suitable experimental designs for the various studies, assist with the collection, care and handling of live weevils used in this work, and provide statistically sound sampling and analyses expertise for determining weevil survival levels for the various seed cotton handling and ginning processes that typically occur in the commercial sector.
