Since 1985, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has encouraged the use of market-based rates to make the electricity industry more efficient. Some electricity is now marketed at regional exchanges and commodities trading centers. This site provides links to the five functioning independent system operators (ISOs) in the United States.

The Energy Information Administration compiles selected annual statistics on wholesale trade. The complete listing of electric utilities is found in the Form EIA-861 and more details on public utilities in the Form EIA-412.
