Research Project: Agricultural Practices, Ecological and Varietal Effects on Aflatoxins and Other Mycotoxins in Corn

Location: Crop Genetics and Production Research

Project Number: 6402-42000-002-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Jul 24, 2002
End Date: May 31, 2006

Objective:
Determine agronomic systems and environmental practices that maximize corn grain yields and profits while minimizing inoculum potential of Aspergillus flavus and toxin development in Mid South corn crops. Identify competing organisms and compounds to minimize aflatoxins, fumonisins, and their respective causal fungi. Determine the efficacy of plant resistance to insects in suppressing mycotoxin production.

Approach:
Determine agronomic and environmental factors that influence aflatoxins and mycotoxins. Develop systems that combine resistant germplasm and agronomic practices into a system that maximizes yield and minimizes health risk.
