- Develops national regulations, policy and technical
guidance on air quality monitoring including the measurement
of criteria pollutants, precursor and related components,
and air toxics.
- Manages the ambient air monitoring program by providing
national oversight of the State and local air monitoring
stations, the national air monitoring stations, the
photochemical assessment monitoring stations, and
selected special purpose monitoring programs.
- Provides a national communication and coordination
vehicle on the ambient air monitoring program by interacting
with the Regional and other EPA offices (e.g., Office
of Research and Development, Office of Atmospheric
Programs), other Federal offices (e.g., National Park
Service, IMPROVE Committee, etc.), State/local agencies
(individually or through the STAPPA/ALAPCO Monitoring
Committee, multi-State organizations, the Standing
Air Monitoring Work Group, etc.), the National Academy
of Sciences, the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee,
and private entities.
- Coordinates with ORD on the full range of air quality
monitoring and quality control/quality assurance issues
to improve base of relevant scientific information,
including new technologies and field studies.
- Operates ambient air monitoring systems to conduct
sampler intercomparison studies, test new methods,
and facilitate operator training.
