Mission:
A primary objective is to evaluate different breeds and to obtain the research information needed for developing efficient breeding programs. Efforts are directed toward developing systems of mating and selection procedures to increase genetic capacity for resistance to disease and efficient beef, sheep and swine production. Genomic maps are being developed in all three species to identify genetic markers to accurately assess breeding value of seedstock. For cattle, particular emphasis is given to developing understanding for synchronizing germplasm capability with different production environments and market targets. Genetics and breeding research efforts with sheep relate to opportunities associated with intensive production systems with particular emphasis on reproductive rate and the production of heavy lamb carcasses with a desirable lean to fat ratio. For swine, breeding research is highly integrated with efforts in other research areas and focuses on components of reproductive rate, growth rate and carcass composition.
