    Surgical Approaches to Weight Loss

    Bariatric surgery uses a band or staples to reduce the size of the stomach (restrictive procedure) and/or the restructuring of the digestive tract (malabsorptive procedure) to create weight loss. This surgery is only performed on people who have a long history of morbid (life threatening) obesity with a body mass index of greater than 40. People considering this surgery also usually have to prove they have been unable to lose weight using conventional weight loss methods.
