Mission:
The mission of the Children's Nutrition Research Center (CNRC) is to define the dietary needs which will assure health in pregnant and lactating women and in children from conception through adolescence. Objectives are to 1) determine how the diet of a pregnant woman affects the health of the child she delivers; 2) determine how the diet of the mother affects lactation and the nutrient content of her milk; 3) determine the relationship between diet and the physical and mental development of infants and children from conception through adolescence; 4) define the nutritional needs of healthy growth and development from birth through adolescence; 5) define the genetics, dietary intakes, physical activity, and behavioral foundations for maintaining energy balance and preventing obesity during childhood; 6)develop noninvasive methods of investigating the dietary requirements of infants, children, adolescents, and pregnant and lactating women; 7) determine the molecular, biochemical, anthropometric, and dietary standards for nutritional assessment of infants, children, adolescents, and pregnant and lactating women; 8) determine the bioavailability of nutrients in foods, factors affecting such bioavailability, and the role of food in meeting nutrient requirements; 9) develop methods of optimizing the bioavailability of nutrients from foods; and 10) determine the molecular basis whereby foods and other nutritional constituents promote healthy growth and differentiation of cells and organs from conception through adolescence.
