Research Project:
San Pedro Riparian Evapotranspiration
Location:
Southwest Watershed Research
Project Number: 5342-13610-007-03
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Sep 07, 2000
End Date: Sep 06, 2005
Objective:
To determine the amount of water transpired and evaporated from the San Pedro River riparian corridor (vegetation and free water sources) and whether that water is derived from groundwater or surface water sources. A geospatial model will also be developed to enable evaluation of the impacts of various management strategies on riparian water use. Documents reimbursable with BLM. Formerly 5342-13610-006-03R (5/1/2002).
Approach:
A combined approach of field studies and model development will be employed. Field studies will focus heavily on the mesquite and cottonwood/willow forest ecosystems within the riparian corridor as they comprise the majority of the groundwater use. Field studies will look at both the seasonal water use and water source. The modeling approach will combine the understanding gained from the field studies in order to calculate evapotranspiration for the entire San Pedro National Riparian Conservation Areas. Finally, if time and budget allows, a preliminary study on the hydrologic impacts of beaver reintroduction will be carried out. Formerly 5342-13610-006-03R (5/1/2002).
