Research Project:
Germplasm Evaluation and Breeding Using Adapted, Exotic, and Novel Sources to Develop Soybean Rust Resistance
Location:
Soybean/maize Germplasm, Pathology, and Genetics Research
Project Number: 3611-22000-016-02
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Jan 01, 2004
End Date: Dec 31, 2004
Objective:
The objective of this project is to develop soybean rust resistant varieties through germplasm evaluation and breeding using adapted, exotic (including wild species), and novel sources of resistance. Since current soybean varieties in the North Central region do not have rust resistance, we are proposing to identify resistance available in soybean germplasm. This project will maximize selection efficiency for rust resistance and accelerate the development of rust resistance in breeding programs with the expectation of releasing germplasm with improved rust resistance.
Approach:
A. Evaluate the host-pathogen interactions of soybean rust isolates collected in Asia, Africa and South America to the known resistance sources and lines identified in the current USB project #2229 "Evaluation of U.S. and exotic germplasm for resistance to soybean rust and disease management strategies."
B. Screen approximately 375 segregating introgressed soybean lines (g. max x G. tomentella) for rust resistance and determine the segregation pattern for chromosome number (2n=40, 41, 42) in resistant lines.
C. Develop populations segregating for rust resistance using as parents newly identified rust resistant lines from the USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection in maturity groups 000 to IX and U.S. commercial varieties and to prepare for genetically mapping rust resistance loci and developing rust resistance cultivars.
D. Identify molecular screening methods to detect resistance genes.
