Research Project: EVALUATION OF SOYBEAN FOR DISEASE RESISTANCE

Objective:
(A) Identify, characterize, and incorporate into improved germplasm new pathogen resistance genes from the USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection and other sources, (B) develop integrated management systems for soybean cyst nematode that incorporate biological controls and/or alternative cropping practices, (C) investigate the epidemiology of soybean diseases, (D) identify pathogen and host proteins involved in disease etiology, and (E) characterize the genetic and pathological variability of soybean pathogens.

Approach:
(a) Commercial cultivars, elite breeding lines, accessions of plant introductions including perennial Glycine species will be evaluated in greenhouse and field tests for resistance to fungal, nematode, and viral pathogens. The nature of resistance will be evaluated through genetic and phenotypic analyses of resistant and susceptible hosts. (b) The population dynamics of soybean cyst nematode and other pathogens will be evaluated in no-till and conventional tillage production systems using rotation with nonhosts and resistant soybean varieties. (c) The occurrence and distribution of important soybean diseases and their vectors in the Midwest will be documented by immunological and molecular techniques. Pathogen effects on yield will be determined in replicated field studies. (d) Virus and host genes involved in transmission of soybean viruses will be identified using molecular and genetic techniques. (e) The molecular and pathological variability and population dynamics of soybean pathogens will be determined by polymorphism analysis of pathogen genomes.
