LEADERSHIP IN PUBLIC HEALTH

In response to the Institute of Medicine report of 1988, CDC/PHPPO encouraged the development of Public Health Leadership training programs.  Programs are designed to expand Leadership Development by providing opportunities for health professionals to develop/enhance their leadership and management skills through a series of lectures, learning situations, interactions among peers and teachers, and knowledge of important issues. Broad based Public Health Leadership skills are developed.

Goal:
To refine and expand state, regional, and national efforts to facilitate, demonstrate and evaluate increased capacity of public health leadership.

State:
Florida Public Health Leadership Institute
This year long program for local and state health departments and the private sector emphasizes personal understanding and growth and mastery of essential leadership skills such as visioning, team building, systems thinking and political effectiveness. Each scholar completes a personal project either in his/her=s community or home agency. Normal Class size is 30. Total from inception is about 90.

Illinois Public Health Leadership Institute
This is a year-long mentor based program for state and local public health administrators, boards of health members, community agency healths and legislators which emphasizes organizational leadership practices and personal leadership skill development. Teams attend from Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. Normal Class size is 45. Total from inception is 200.

Kansas Pubic Health Leadership Institute
This program is currently under development. Normal Class size is 30. Total from inception is about 60.

Michigan Public Health Leadership Institute
This year long program emphasizes the importance of more effective local level models which empower communities to improve health and human services. The activities are directed toward building collaborative models across the government, private and nonprofit sectors to provide solutions to issues and problems facing health professionals. Normal Class size is 30. Total from inception is 60.

Missouri Public Health Leadership Certificate Program
During the two year program, participants attend four 3-day sessions and develop a practice-base case study integrating and applying principles learned during the program. Normal Class size is 15. Total from inception is about 60.

Ohio Public Health Leadership Institute
The twelve month program for public health officials and community leaders increases the leadership competencies and raises the awareness of emergent public heath issues. Community groups, or leadership teams, comprised of 5-8 community leaders, work together with local public health officials to tackle community health related projects. Normal Class size is 45. Total from inception is about 135.

Oklahoma Public Health Leadership Institute
This collaborative partnership between Oklahoma State Department of Health and the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center/College of Pubic Health consists of three modules over one year. The curriculum focus is on development of leadership skills and population-based preventive health incorporating community development training. Normal Class size is 30. Total from inception is about 60.

Texas Public Health Leadership Institute
Public Health agencies and academic institutions are presently planning the development of a Texas Pubic Health Leadership Institute for public health practitioners. No classes have been held.

Regional:
Mid-Atlantic Health Leadership Institute
This Regional Institute (Maryland, Delaware, and District of Columbia) provides a unique learning experience to health professionals and policy; makers who are integral to the development of healthy communities. Through the development of leadership skills and shared vision, the Institute will facilitate creative, integrated collaborative approaches to the achievement of community health goals. No classes have been held.

Northeast Regional Pubic Health Leadership Institute
This year long training program brings together state and local health administrators, academia, and pubic health associations from New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Maine, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont to improve the leadership skills of public health practitioners and promote healthy communities. Normal Class size is 35. Total from inception is 35.

Regional Leadership Institute for Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Region
This year long program is designed to develop leadership for senior and middle management public health professionals and provide training in the development of strategic vision and direction and identifying collaborative leadership opportunities in the community and agency setting. The Institute is coordinated through a consortium of four universities. No classes have been held.

South Central Public Health Leadership Institute
This year long program develops leadership skills through education, individual change and growth. It facilitates the application of core functions, provides shared experiences in a learning community, and translates leadership into a tool for community empowerment. Participants attend from Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Normal Class size is 40. Total from inception is 68.

Public Health Leadership Institute of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia (TriState)
This is a partnership program of three state departments of public health and the University of North Carolina School of Public Health. The Institute utilizes distance based learning technologies and working retreats to offer an experiential leadership skills development program and to strengthen relationships between public health practitioner and academicians. Normal Class size is 30. Total from inception is 30.

National:
CDC/UC Public Health Leadership Institute
The Institute´s mission is to strengthen America´s health system by enhancing the leadership capabilities of senior federal, state and local public health officials, academicians; and health system executives. The program develops the ability to create and implement a shared vision and the skills to mobilize the resources necessary to achieve national health objectives. Normal Class size is 60. Total from inception is X.

Public Health Leadership Development Network
Membership includes academic and practice directors of all state and regional public health leadership programs.
