Research Project: Ecosystem Monitoring and Development of Monitoring Tools for the Fort Bliss Military Reservation (Phase Iii)

Location: Range Management Research

Project Number: 6235-11210-005-34
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Aug 18, 2004
End Date: Aug 17, 2009

Objective:
To continue development and calibration of remote sensing tools to evaluate grassland conditions in military training areas.

Approach:
Working in collaboration with Fort Bliss personnel, we will characterize cover, composition, spatial structure and soil stability on 20 plots with variable cover in a 15,000-acre area. TM imagery (30M resolution) will be used for correlation with cover values and IKONOS (1M-4M resolution) will be used for correlation with spatial characteristics of stands. The Jornada will be responsible for all ground measurements and site characterization; Fort Bliss is responsible for imagery acquisition and analysis.
