Research Project: Microbial Control of the Glassy Winged Sharpshooter

Location: Western Integrated Cropping Systems Research

Project Number: 5303-21220-002-03
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 30, 2002
End Date: Sep 14, 2006

Objective:
To develop novel microbial control agents for the glassy winged sharpshooter.

Approach:
The glassy winged sharpshooter (GWSS) is a new pest to California and has arrived without its natural enemies. Our approach will be to determine if insect pathogenic fungi or nematodes can effectively reduce sharpshooter numbers in the overwintering sites. These sites will be examined for prevalence of naturally occurring fungi and these fungi will be collected and cultured. In addition, fungal isolates active against other insects in the San Joaquin Valley will be screened for pathogenicity against GWSS. Documents SCA with UC Davis.
