Personnel Announcement

May 12, 2004

President George W. Bush today announced that he has named Carol J. Thompson to be Director of the Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP). Ms. Thompson has served as Acting Director of ONAP since August 2003. Ms. Thompson joined ONAP in November 2002 as Deputy Director, participating in the development and implementation of President Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

As the Director of the Office of National AIDS Policy, Ms. Thompson leads an AIDS office that is responsible for coordinating both domestic and international HIV/AIDS issues. Ms. Thompson will work with the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of State and other federal agencies to develop and coordinate HIV/AIDS policy and programs for the Administration.

Ms. Thompson's previous government experience at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative focused on health care and trade-related policy and legislative work. Immediately prior to joining ONAP, she served in the White House in the Office of the Chief of Staff. Ms. Thompson has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.
