Best Practices & Case Studies

Mitigation activities have been implemented across the country to save lives, reduce property damage and decrease the money spent on recovery actions. Mitigation success at times has been accomplished after a devastating disaster and local government and the public have realized the need to create change in their community. Early mitigation actions, which focus on the prevention of loss of life and less damage to buildings and other structures, have been implemented throughout the United States. By sharing information, communities and individuals can learn from each other and hopefully adopt noteworthy activities themselves.

Mitigation Best Practices Database

FEMA has created a database of Mitigation Success Stories from communities and states across the United States. Use the "Search Stories" link below to search the database for specific types of success stories. The database can be searched by a variety of categories (e.g., state, hazard type, project type). This capability will help the many people who visit the FEMA site find success stories that are relevant to them and their communities.

We are temporarily unable to accept new story submissions via the website; however, FEMA continues to be interested in learning about outstanding mitigation and insurance projects. Even so, FEMA encourages Federal, State, and local officials to contact your FEMA Regional office if you wish to submit success stories for future inclusion in the database. Businesses, homeowners, and others with experience in carrying out hazard mitigation projects or flood insurance projects are also invited to submit stories for possible future inclusion in the database by emailing those stories to the email address listed at the end of this paragraph. If you have any comments or questions please email them to us at: mitsuccess@dhs.gov.
