General Overview
Vacancy Number: STEP-SEC-2004
Open Period: October 1, 2003 to September 30, 2004

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is accepting applications for the 2003-2004 school year from students at least 16 years of age (at the time of appointment) who wish to work full-time or part-time while attending school. Positions are temporary and appointments may be extended on a yearly basis until the student completes the requirements for a degree, diploma, or certificate. Positions are paid. Applications will be accepted continuously through September 30, 2004. Those applications received from candidates determined eligible for employment will be referred for consideration as vacancies occur throughout the school year.

Program Goals

To provide employment for students from the metropolitan D.C. area while attending school and to assist with clerical/administrative/research functions in the agency. Please note that this program is intended for students residing in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area only. Our Regional and District offices maintain their own application files. Applicants interested in working for one of our Region or District offices should forward application materials directly to that office. The Student Temporary Employment Program is not designed for those who are interested in summer employment. Please check our website for information and application procedures for summer positions.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the student temporary employment program, candidates must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Be currently enrolled on at least a half-time basis (determined by the particular school or university) in
    - an accredited high school, technical, or vocational school or
    - a 2 or 4 year college, university or graduate or professional school
  • Be enrolled in an academic, vocational, or technical program leading to a degree, diploma or certificate; and
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.

Types of Positions and
Qualifications Required

Generally, students will be hired to perform clerical duties such as typing/data entry, filing, photocopying, and answering telephones. Occasionally, some positions may be filled which involve assisting staff by conducting research. Grade/Salary is determined based on work experience and/or education completed.

To qualify, candidates must possess the following:

GS-1 positions-Be in high school
GS-2 positions-Have completed high school or have 3 months of general clerical work experience
GS-3 positions-Have 1 year of education above high school or 6 months of general clerical experience
GS-4 positions-Have 2 years of education above high school or 1 year of general clerical experience

Occasionally, research positions at the GS-5, GS-7, or GS-9 level are available. To qualify candidates must possess the following:

GS-5 positions-Have completed a 4 year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree, or 3 years of progressively responsible work experience
GS-7 positions-Have 1 year of graduate study, or 1 year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level
GS-9 positions-Have 2 years of graduate study or a master's or equivalent degree, or 1 year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level

Course work must have involved major study in finance, accounting, investments, economics, business administration, or other related fields.

How To Apply

Interested applicants must submit the following:

  • Resume, Optional Form OF-612, and/or SF-171, Application for Federal Employment. Please include in your application the office location you would like to work in and the days and hours you are available to work.
  • Proof of enrollment in an academic, vocational, or technical school; specifically, a registration form;
  • Proof of cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale; specifically, a current transcript or grade report;
  • Statement on application indicating current typing speed (required for office automation/typing positions)

Please indicate your date of birth, Social Security Number, and country of citizenship in your application. Applicants who fail to submit the required information will not receive consideration. Also, due to the volume of applications received, candidates who fail to submit the required information will not be contacted to obtain the missing information.

Miscellaneous Information

As openings occur in the Washignton, D.C., Headquarters and Alexandria, Virginia, Operations Center offices, applications will be referred to the appropriate selecting officials. There is no guarantee that there will be openings for all students applying.

Applications are accepted on an on-going basis and will be maintained in our STEP files until September 30th of each year. At that time, all applications will be purged. If you are interested in remaining in consideration for future positions that become available after September 30th, you must submit a new application package with updated information.

Student appointments are made periodically through the year and normally are Not-to-Exceed (NTE) September 30th, funds permitting.

A student who is not a U.S. citizen may apply provided he/she has been lawfully admitted to the United States, possesses a valid work permit, and is a resident of a country that is an ally of the United States.
