Research Project: Isolation of Biologically Active Naphthoquinones from Thespesia Populnea

Location: Cotton Pathology Research

Project Number: 6202-22000-024-02
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Jan 15, 2002
End Date: Jan 14, 2007

Objective:
Isolate and purify biologically-active naphthoquinones from Thespesia populnea.

Approach:
Extract heartwood from T. populnea using organic solvents. Use chromatographic techniques (i.e., thin layer chromatography, column chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography) to isolate and purify biologically-active naphthoquinones. Determine the structure of purified compounds using spectroscopic techniques (i.e., FT-IR, GC-MS and NMR).
