Research Project: Evaluation of Nitrogen and Planting Rate Responses on Field Scale Corn Production

Location: Agricultural Land and Watershed Management Research

Project Number: 3625-12660-002-26
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 22, 2003
End Date: Mar 15, 2005

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to evaluate the impact of nitrogen management and plant population on corn yield in central Iowa. This project is part of a larger study to define the response of corn management practices that would lead to improved production efficiency.

Approach:
Field-scale studies will be conducted to determine the effect of nitrogen corn growth and yield and the typical variation observed in corn and soybean fields under typical management practices. Studies are designed for 270 acres to utilize production scale equipment and to view the differences within each field through various remote sensing platforms. Nitrogen will be varied 50 lb/A from the producers normal N rate. Observations will be made of the crop growth (leaf area, phenological stage, leaf N and C content, and height) and grain yield and quality at the end of the season. These observations are made throughout the field using GPS equipment linked to the measurement method. Observations will be made of the soil N content prior to planting along with digital terrain and electrical conductivity measurements.
