About This Site
Welcome to the NCI Cancer Research Initiatives Web site. This site provides information on current cancer research funding opportunities supported by the National Cancer Institute. The initiatives are organized by organ or cancer site ("type of cancer") and/or by broad area of scientific interest ("type of research"). The areas of scientific interest are similar to those identified in the Common Scientific Outline (CSO), a classification system created by NCI and several partner agencies and organizations to provide a common approach to comparing and assessing cancer research projects. The types of research categories include:
- Biology
- Etiology (Causes of Cancer)
- Prevention
- Early Detection, Diagnosis, and Prognosis
- Treatment
- Cancer Control, Survivorship, and Outcomes Research
- Scientific Model Systems
- Cancer Research Training, Career Development, and Education

You can review lists of NCI research funding initiatives for which NCI is currently accepting applications either by Type of Cancer or by Type of Cancer Research. These listings provide links to complete application information from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts where available. Summary information includes links to NCI program contacts, relevant background information, additional notices, and important dates. An archive of recent initiatives which are no longer accepting applications is also provided for each Type of Cancer and Type of Cancer Research as investigator-initiated applications for funding of projects addressing the scientific priorities of these initiatives may still be of interest to the NCI. Interested investigators should be in touch with the program contacts for further information.
