Research Project:
Biochemistry of Insect Pests/predators/parasitoids to Enhance Biological Control
Location:
Insect Genetics and Biochemistry Research
Project Number: 5442-22000-036-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: May 25, 2003
End Date: Aug 31, 2005
Objective:
1. To determine the chemical and biochemical factors involved in feeding, development, reproduction and host-finding of economically important insects, both pest and beneficial; 2. To determine the role of surface chemistry in host defense and host recognition; in chemical camouflage and resistance to desiccation. Use this information to enhance the efficiency of biological control programs involving mass rearing.
Approach:
Use physical, chemical and biochemical techniques to identify the nutrients of beneficial and prey insects involved in their development and reproduction as well as that of their parasitoids and predators; characterize the cuticular surface chemistry involved in host finding/recognition of pest insects by their predators and parasitoids.
