National Human Genome Research Institute Physician Scientist Development Program

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is pleased to announce the inauguration of its new Physician Scientist Development Program (PSDP) in Genomic and Genetic Medicine, located on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The PSDP is designed for board eligible/certified physicians who seek additional training to develop an independent research program that integrates the field of genomics with clinical investigation in genetic medicine. The participants will have substantial protected time to develop their own integrated, clinical-basic science research program that could then serve as the basis for an independent research career. It is the goal of the program to train investigators who will be competitive for independent faculty positions at the NHGRI, other NIH institutes, or other top medical research institutions.

Program Details

The program will provide support to design, implement, and pursue a research program. The project will be developed with the guidance of a mentor in the intramural research program. With the assistance of the mentor, the incumbent will design a project that integrates the direct study and/or treatment of human subjects with a bench research laboratory project. The mentor will advise and guide the incumbent in the selection of the project, the study design, patient recruitment and analysis, bench research analysis, and all other aspects of the training. The program will provide for a competitive salary for the incumbent, laboratory space and supplies, clinical research budget, and research technician. The support is renewable annually, with demonstration of adequate progress, for up to five years.

Eligibility

The program is open to physicians who are board certified or eligible in any appropriate specialty and have completed their training within the past five years. Applicants are not required to have substantial basic research experience but must demonstrate an aptitude for, and commitment to, research. Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the PSDP Web page, which will provide additional, detailed information on the program.

The NIH is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from women and minorities.
