for including websites in the list are shown below
the category headings. Links are considered for the
list as they come to our attention. To recommend
a link for the list, use our user
feedback form. We
reserve the right to change the criteria to keep
the list to a managable size of selected references.

Websites that are managed by or for U.S. Government
agencies and contain content about water resources. Some U.S. Government
websites on specific topics are under other categories.
Government-sponsored websites serving regional
or multi-state activities concerning water resources.
State Cooperators
State agencies, participating in the Cooperative
Water Program, who have asked to be included here.
Includes other nations' counterparts to USGS plus
multinational governmental organizations involved in water resources.
Academic websites with a focus on water resources.
Non-profit, professional or educational organizations
with a focus on the scientific study of water resources. Priority
is given to organizations which have activities co-sponsored
by USGS or those with journals in which USGS scientists commonly
publish.
On-line catalog references to major collections
of scientific publications about water resources. The catalog must
be open to the public.
Large, cataloged collections of links to other
websites with scientific information on water resources. Although
some sites may be commercial, priority is given to non-profit,
non-advocacy sites.
Websites having unique and interesting characteristics
that do not fit within the other classes. All sites must be non-profit,
non-advocacy, and focus on objective, scientific information.
