President Bush Announced His Intention to Designate Garcia to be Acting Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization at the Department of Justice

President George W. Bush today announced his intention to designate one individual to serve as a member of his administration:

The President intends to designate Michael J. Garcia of New York, to be Acting Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization at the Department of Justice. Mr. Garcia is currently the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Enforcement at the Department of Commerce. Prior to his current position, he was Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. During his tenure, he was twice the recipient of the Attorney General's Award for Exceptional Service and he also received the Attorney General's Award for Distinguished Service. Earlier in his career, Mr. Garcia worked as a law clerk for New York State Court of Appeals Judge, Judith S. Kaye. He earned his bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Bingamton and his master's degree from the College of William and Mary. Then received his J.D. from the Albany Law School at Union University where he was first in his class.
