MetalsProgram DescriptionSupports research to increase understanding and predictive capabilities for relating synthesis, processing, alloy chemistry, and microstructure of metals to their physical and structural properties and performance in various applications and environments. Metals research encompasses the broad areas of physical and mechanical metallurgy. Topics supported include phase transformations and equilibria; morphology; solidification; surface modification, structure, and properties; interfaces and grain boundary structure; nanostructures; corrosion and oxidation; defects; deformation and fracture; and welding and joining.
