Louisville Guide to Products and Services
The National Weather Service (NWS), under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA), and the Department of Commerce (DOC), is responsible for providing weather services to the nation.
We are charged with observing and reporting the weather, and have the
responsibility of issuing forecasts and warnings for all manners of weather,
for the safety of the general public and in the interest of the national
economy.
This mission is carried out by a network of weather offices and
national centers located throughout the United States and it's
territories, along with a highly trained workforce of dedicated men and
women. Through this network, we provide an invaluable service to
both government agencies and to the general public 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week, 365 days a year.
Enabling legislation provides
for:
- Public weather service
- River and flood service
- Climatological service
- Basic weather service such as the observing, communications, and processing activities needed to support the other services.
Within the framework outlined above, and in very broad terms, the priorities for service to the nation
are:
- Protection of life,
- Protection of property, and
- Promotion of the nation's welfare and economy.
This guide has been produced in an effort to increase public awareness and improve public education in weather. It lists the various types of weather products issued by National Weather Service
(NWS) office in Louisville, Kentucky, serving south central Indiana and
North Central Kentucky.
