Introduction to the Child Care Bureau

The Child Care Bureau supports low-income working families through child care financial assistance and promotes children's learning by improving the quality of early care and education and afterschool programs.

Overview of the Child Care and Development Fund

The Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) has made available $4.8 billion to states, territories, and tribes in fiscal year 2003. This program, authorized by the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, PL 104-193, assists low-income families, families receiving temporary public assistance, and those transitioning from public assistance in obtaining child care so they can work or attend training/education. Show Federal Fiscal Years 2002-2003 CCDF overview and other general CCDF information.

Under the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF), State Lead Agencies have considerable latitude in administering and implementing their child care programs. Included are some of the basic responsibilities of a State Lead Agency as found in the statute and the regulations.
