Welcome and Introduction
Welcome to the Web page for the Advisory Committee for Biological Sciences (BIOAC). The purpose of the BIOAC is to advise the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) on such issues as:

  • How BIO's mission, programs, and goals can best serve the scientific community
  • Important issues in institutional administration and policy
  • How BIO can promote quality graduate and undergraduate education in the biological sciences
  • Priority investment areas in biological research
  • Government Performance and Results Act, including Committees of Visitors

The BIOAC meets twice a year. Members represent a cross section of biology with representatives from many different subdisciplines within the field; a cross section of institutions including industry; broad geographic representation; and balanced representation of women and under-represented minorities. We believe that this diversity allows the BIOAC to encompass as many perspectives on the biological sciences as possible.

Some of the important topics that have been discussed at BIOAC meetings include: advanced computing in biology; the impending FastLane electronic grant submission and review mechanisms; ways of encouraging the submission and selection of high risk proposals; issues surrounding graduate education at all levels -- K-12, undergraduate and graduate; plant genome research program; and accountability as addressed by the Government Performance and Results Act. Also, BIOAC members have sponsored several workshops at universities across the country on topics such as the integration of research and education and the changing relationship between NSF and universities. The reports of these workshops are accessible via this page (see below).

These Web pages will be a source of information on all BIOAC activities and a forum for the biological science community to communicate with the BIOAC. Here you will find such items as:
